Something for all Muslims to think about

Asalamulaikum Warahamtullahi Wabarkatu,

Do we ever think about who our friends are? Ever heard of that saying do not ask about a man but rather ask about his friends. The reason for that is that usually the people we hang around with are like us and share similar interests. I wanted to bring this to every one’s attention because who our friends are in this world and those who we look up to are very important. On the day of judgment we will be raised amongst the people who we love the most, so if you love a celebrity music artist or whoever it maybe those will be the people you would be with. Those that love our Prophet(saw) and have righteous friends or family they will be with them because those are the people they truly loved in this world.

To get to my point, yeah we don’t usually think what kind of friends we have but keep in mind even our closest people on the day of judgment will be against us. That goes for our homeboy/homegirl. Yeah they will complain to Allah and say oh Allah this person was my friend but never reminded me of you he never asked me to pray or to turn to you, I’m innocent. I’d rather have a few friends who are righteous than a whole bunch that will take me to hell. We may not realize it cause these people are our friends but if they were truly your friend they would look out for you in this world and the hereafter. On that day you can lie even your own body parts will testify against you. Having righteous friends who love Allah those are the ones that will benefit you on the day of judgment they will be your witness to Allah who wouldn’t want that?

Allah the Exalted says in the Qur’an: “And (remember) the Day when the wrong-doer will bite his hands and say: Woe to me! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger. Woe to me! If only I had not taken so- and-so as a friend! He has led me astray from this Reminder (the Qur’an) after it had come to me.” [25:27-29]. He also says: “Friends on that Day will be enemies one to another, except al-Muttaqoon (i.e. those who have Taqwah).” [43:67]

But when we face Allah and say oh Allah I wish I would have chosen so and so as my friend but by then it will be too late! Allah gave us all the signs and information we needed to know this so why wait until we die? Is it really worth it having bad friends and enjoying this world while the hereafter is forever. Wouldn’t you rather have righteous friends whom you may meet in jannah or follow those other so called friends to hell. If you want to know about true friendship look at the sahaba and our Prophet(saw), they were ready to die for him, I’m sure you all know of that hadith where Abu bakr(ra) was bitten by a snake in the cave protecting Nabi(saw) he was sleeping. Even though Abu bakr(ra) was in pain he didn’t want to wake up the prophet so he held in the pain. Who does that? Will any of our friends do this for us now a days? Ask yourself, life’s too short.
