My Inspiration: Shaykh Hamza Yusuf (Hafidhullah)

Bismillah Ar Rahman Ar Raheem

Assalam Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barkatuhu

Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is an amazing scholar. He is a man full of wisdom Masha Allah. He is one of my favorite scholars. His lectures are amazing Subhan Allah! When I start listening to his lectures, I can really tell it’s affecting me in some way. In my mind, I would acknowledge what the scholar has said and try to focus on becoming a better person.
When I was in High school, I began reading Islamic books and fell in love with them. Whether it was recess time or any free time, my friends would find me with one Islamic book. It became my passion. I don’t really like reading books much. However, when I see any Islamic book, I would pick it up and start reading. This was the time when I first got to know about Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. One of the teachers told my class about him.

A few years ago, I went to the bazaar place at ISNA here in Chicago. I looked at all the pretty clothes and all kinds of other stuff but nothing was more appealing to me than the Islamic Books stacked on the Tables. All of a sudden I felt I was in a treasure Island. There were all kinds of books by Ibn Taymiyyah (Rahimahullah), Imam Ghazzali and many others.

I feel that one may read many books however when it comes to understanding it, a Scholar can explain to us in much better way. I believe that a one hour class with a scholar is equal to or more than spending 5 hours of reading different kinds of books. A scholar is like a rich man full of wealth. The wealth of knowledge and wisdom is more precious than the gold or the diamonds.

I remember crying so much in one of his lectures while the Shaykh was crying himself in his lectures. It’s when your hearts soften remembering Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala, out of so much love for Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam). How much Rasulullah (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) cared for us and cried for us before we were even born! Allahu Akbar!!

There would be times while listening to his lecture, I would get so attentive and start to take notes. His lectures have a great impact on people. He has contributed a lot to the ummah with his extensive knowledge Masha Allah.

Usually when I write an Islamic article, I would gather about four or five Islamic books and start writing on the topic. It would take me some time to put everything down. One of my hobbies is to spend a lot of time reviewing and looking through the Hadith books over and again. It’s my passion. I love it! We all need reminders since we forget a lot. Therefore, I try to refresh my memory and read again. This way I can almost memorize and understand it better. The Sahaba (Radi Allahu Anhum) would act upon something and then gain more knowledge. Therefore before I go to another Islamic book, I try to see if I fully understand everything I already know and try to balance everything. Understanding of Islam is very important.

Also whenever I watch Islamic lectures, I try to see if a scholar refers to a Hadith, whether I know it or not. If I have read it before, then I know more about it. When I listen to one lecture of Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, the hadiths he would mention in his lecture, Amazingly I can find it in six different books or so. It would take me a couple of hours just to collect and all together then prepare a lecture. His memory is amazing Masha Allah.

I believe that in everyone’s life there are people who are sent from Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala to help them in each stage of life. It’s a great blessing to have found such people who brings us closer to Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala. Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is an inspiration to me and my friends Alhamdulillah.

Islam brought a host of fine social rules which instill an attitude of chivalry, nobility, good manners and politeness in the heart of the Muslim. One of the most prominent of these teachings is to give due respect to elders and those who are deserving of respect (such as scholars, etc.)

“He does not belong to my ummah who does not honour our elders, show compassion to our young ones, and pay due respect to our scholars.” [Reported with a hasan isnad by Ahmad and Tabarani]

May Allah bless Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and grant him a high place in Paradise Ameen

The superiority of the learned man over the worshipper is like that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars. The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving only knowledge, and he who takes it takes a big fortune.” [Abu Dawud]
